Bulb Plant Care Information
The most common bulb plants sold by retail florists are tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth plants. Combination planters, also known as bulb gardens, may also contain grape hyacinth, iris, freesia, and crocus plants as well.
The care of these bulb plants are similar. Most bulb plants will flower under a wide range of light conditions.
Keep the soil moderately moist. Water thoroughly when soil surface is dry to the touch, making sure to drain off any excess water.
Bulb plants do best in cool temperatures, 60-65F (15-18C)during the daytime. Cool night temperatures (50-60F/10-15C) will help to extend the flowering period when kept indoors. Avoid excessively hot or cold areas.
If you wish to enjoy your bulb plants in your garden for years to come, keep them in a well-lighted, cool area (50-55F/10-13C) and keep moist after flowering. Cut off the stems and leaves when they are no longer green. In mid-spring, plant the bulbs in a sunny area with well-drained soil. The time it will take to rebloom depends on your local climatic conditions and the size of the bulbs.
