No Wedding Is “Average”, Nor Is There Any “Average” Flower Budget

If you google the question “How much should I budget for wedding flowers,” you’ll come up with about 3,050,000 results, last I checked.

Allow me to save you some time and cut to the chase.

As a rule of thumb, between 8% and 10% of your overall wedding budget is what all these articles recommend you budget for the flowers for your wedding day.

Is that number high or low? I honestly don’t know. It’s just an average cost gleaned from a number of wedding industry surveys from vendors and consumers.

What Affects the Cost of Wedding Flowers

There is a wide variety of factors that can affect how much your wedding flowers cost, such as the size of the wedding party, the type and amount of ceremony flowers and reception flowers needed, as well as the types of fresh flowers chosen for the floral arrangements and wedding decor.

So while the average percentages these articles mention may or may not be accurate for your situation, they will at least give you a starting point for setting a reasonable floral budget.

But there is a better (and easier) way to determine how much to budget with more accuracy.

Here’s How to Really Establish a Reasonable Floral Budget

Most brides don’t have much experience dealing with a professional florist until they begin planning their wedding. So they don’t have a reasonable expectation of how much to budget for flowers. I see this more often than not when working with brides-to-be.

So recently, I added a nifty wedding cost estimating tool to this site that you can use to get an idea of what other couples spent on their wedding florals in your city or town.

What Makes This Tool So Useful

This tool is not based on vendor prices but on what couples paid. That’s what I think makes this such a great budgeting tool.

I’m usually skeptical about the accuracy of tools like this, so I looked back at some of our wedding flower orders over the last two years for comparison purposes.

Most couples spent $400 to $2400 on wedding flowers with us. This chart summarizes the average bride spends with us on her bridal party flowers.

Our pricing sweet spot

Oh, by the way, all of our general wedding flower prices can be found here.

Although that price range varies widely, when I ran the numbers in the wedding cost estimator, I found them to be surprisingly on target for the Milwaukee area.

Remember that I only used this tool to check on the flowers. You can use it for nearly every item of your wedding budget.

This tool is a good starting point for most couples to help develop a reasonable budget for the flowers for their wedding.

Or you can use it to get an idea of what others in your area have spent on a specific item, like a bridal bouquet, or other things like their wedding centerpieces, bridesmaid bouquets, and other personal flowers.

Armed with this information early on, you’ll be able to make better purchasing decisions when choosing your vendors.

Understanding how much the average price others have paid for flowers can help you budget for your flowers more accurately.

Remember that knowing what others have paid does not always paint the entire picture and, in some cases, can lead to unreasonable expectations.

Be sure you and your florist are on the same page regarding your expectations.
